What kind of steps can I take to make my parents happy?

Your question is masha Allah, a very praiseworthy question. We live in a time when children are too often concerned about their needs and desires only. They care little about the happiness of their parents. A question like this brings light to the heart. May Allah reward you.

• Firstly, it is important to obey our parents in all matters which are permissible, and we should obey with a smile.
• Secondly, if they command you to do something which is not allowed in Islam than refuse politely. Do not be rude to them.
• Thirdly, we should willingly and happily serve them, without being asked.
• Fourthly, we should be loving and friendly towards them at all times. Always look at them with kindness and with a smile on your face. Spend time with them, confide in them, ask for their advice etc. Basically treat them like your best friends.
• And last but not least, we should forgive them when they make a mistake, for they are only human.

We learn from Rasul Sallahu alaihi wa sallam that the pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of our parents and the displeasure of Allah is because of the displeasure of our parents.
May Allah grant me and you the ability to please our parents and to fulfill our duties towards them.
